Obituary

Johnny David Tyler, Jr., 56, of Lugoff, formerly from Sumter, passed away February 21, 2026.  Known affectionately by those closest to him as “Little Johnny”, he will be remembered for his resilience, his gentle spirit, and the wholehearted way he cared for the people and world around him.

Born on June 3, 1969, in Manning, South Carolina, Johnny was the son of Johnny David Tyler, Sr. and Gloria Gail Floyd. He grew up in Sumter and attended Furman High School. Over the years, he worked in a variety of roles before discovering his true calling on the open road as a long‑haul truck driver. He was proud to be part of the Butler Transport family in Kansas City, Missouri.  This role gave him purpose, stability, and a sense of pride. On the open road, he discovered a kind of peace—mile after mile of sky, mountains, fields, and the quiet beauty of God’s creation unfolding before him. Along the way, he found a loyal companion in Pebbles, his beloved Chiweenie, who faithfully rode beside him and made every mile a little brighter.

He was, at his core, a deeply loving and trusting soul—someone who felt life intensely and cared with his whole heart. He was cherished beyond measure by his mother, whose love for him never wavered and who will miss him every day of her life.

He is survived by his devoted mother, Gloria Gail Floyd Danner (Gary, predeceased) of Ridgeway;  father, Johnny David Tyler, Sr. of Walterboro;  sister, Melodie Watson (Dan) of Simpsonville; niece, Madeline Watson McClain (Caleb) of Lexington; nephew, Jacob Watson (Murielly) of Dallas; three grand-nephews, William McClain, Pierson McClain and Nicholas Watson; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins who will remember him with tenderness, sorrow, and gratitude for the time they had with him.
